The play â€Å"A Memory of Lizzie† is a fictional look at the childhood years of the infamous murderess Lizzie Bordon The Memory of Lizzie Bordon The play â€Å"A Memory of Lizzie† is a fictional look at the childhood years of the infamous murderess Lizzie Bordon. Set in America the late eighteen hundreds, the play takes place in an average middle class neighbourhood in Massachusetts at that time. The play takes place in an average suburban school, and the characters are (or at least the children of) moderately wealthy people. The Characters in the play are the childhood acquaintances of Lizzie Bordon, each aged around twelve years old, though due the era they would probably be less mature than modern day twelve year olds. Each†¦show more content†¦The girls would wear their hair tied back and the boys would have theirs cut short. The scene started with the children frozen, each playing their individual games. Then a flash-forward occurs with Frances coming forward and saying a monologue describing what happened they day Mr and Mrs Bordon died, court room style. After this the children break the freeze and talk among themselves. Noticing Lizzie, they decide to wind her up. They begin to ask her what her middle name stands for. At this they get an immediate reaction which is what they had hoped for. After a brief time of taunting her, the children begin to grow bored. Just then Rachel Brayton pipes up saying that she knows Lizzie’s first name. This brings about instant reprisal from Lizzie as she steals Rachel’s Doll and threatening her, which results in Rachel keeping quiet. After more bullying off the other children, Lizzie storms off, unfortunately dropping her prayer book, which has her full name in it. Finding out her middle name is Andrew, the children step up their bullying the next time Lizzie comes on stage, making her once more storm out swearing revenge on Rachel, even though she didn’t tell the other children The part that I played in this scene was that of David, and my character objectives were to be as offensive to Lizzie as possible. My character liked to ruin the games of other children around him and be a right nuisance. Whenever there was

Alternatives To Promote Literature Education Essay Free Essays

In Singapore, the revenue-generating touristry industry has ever been critical for our development. For illustration, it generated about a astonishing S $ 14.1 billion in tourer grosss in 2007[ 1 ], lending close to 5 % of our GDP ( Gross Domestic Product ) . We will write a custom essay sample on Alternatives To Promote Literature Education Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now In recent old ages, our touristry industry has shown marks of stagnancy, even with the attempts by Singapore Tourism Board ( STB ) to advance touristry. Diagram 1 shows the Butler ‘s Tourism Life-Cycle Model that illustrates the five chief phases that every state ‘s touristry industry will undergo. Every state will first get down at the geographic expedition phase and travel along the Cycle from Stage 1 onwards, as its touristry industry grows and develops. In 2003, there was grounds that Singapore was at the 4th phase, stagnancy, evident from the undermentioned grounds: The worsening growing in visitant Numberss Singapore ‘s touristry growing has been stagnating or even worsening since 1997 – 2003. Harmonizing to touristry informations, the figure of tourer reachings has been stagnating between 6 million to 7.5 million during this period, and for some old ages it has shown a negative per centum alteration from the old twelvemonth. The per centum alterations for these old ages are as follows: -1.30 % ( 1997 ) , -13.28 % ( 1998 ) , -2.20 % ( 2001 ) and -19.04 % ( 2003 ) .[ 2 ] Short tourer corsets On norm, tourers were merely remaining for 2 to 3 yearss, clearly demoing that Singapore ‘s tourer attractive forces were losing their entreaty.[ 3 ] Therefore, the Singapore Tourism Board ( STB ) attempted to rejuvenate touristry, and to farther promote Singapore as a tourer finish by utilizing alternate attacks which we will analyze below: Advantages Disadvantages Convention: Ad Since 1990, Singapore has used runs to actively advance Singapore as a tourer finish. These runs use a multi-pronged attack to advance Singapore, such as through utilizing different signifiers of media for these advertisement runs. In 2004, STB used the tagline † Uniquely Singapore † to look the run to advance Singapore as a vibrant and voguish tourer finish. The current run ( since 2010 ) has the tagline â€Å" Your Singapore † , and aims to advance Singapore as an exciting finish. For illustration, STB has designed an synergistic web site ( YourSingapore.com ) to foreground the exciting and alone entreaties of Singapore ‘s touristry industry. The runs raise planetary consciousness of Singapore ‘s touristry and heighten our image. Requires capital which could hold been used to develop other countries, e.g. health care. Thus the demand for the S $ 2A billion Tourist Development Fund, of which a part of it was used for such candidacies ( merchandise development ) . The intent of this Fund is as follows: ( a ) Infrastructure Development: Developing critical substructure to back up touristry growing ( B ) Capability Development: Enhancing the capableness of Singapore-based travel and touristry participants every bit good as pulling universe category travel and touristry concerns and organisations to put up in Singapore ( degree Celsius ) Anchoring Iconic/Major Events: Attracting iconic or mega events that will foreground Singapore as a premier finish for Leisure, Business and Services client sections ( vitamin D ) Merchandise Development: Developing strategic touristry merchandises Can you believe of another disadvantage? I can non happen a manner to reply his first remark: ( Sorry Option: Changing Percepts and Images Singapore ‘s tourer attractive forces are turning older and losing entreaty ; therefore the demand for makeovers. After Jurong Bird park ‘s S $ 10A million makeover, visitant Numberss rose by 11 %[ 4 ]. Therefore, STB has allocated capital, through enterprises like BOOST[ 5 ]/Tourism Development Fund[ 6 ], of which a part of the financess are used to upgrade these tourer attractive forces. This alternate purposes to increase the satisfaction degree of tourers here such that they will be more likely to do repetition visits or utilize recommend Singapore as a finish ( viva-voce ) . Ensures that our attractive forces are invariably renewed, to heighten their entreaty to foreign tourers. These upgraded attractive forces can besides profit locals who visit these topographic points and better their satisfaction degree. Option: Collaboration MICE ( Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions ) touristry is one of the fastest turning sectors of the planetary touristry industry today. It involves states join forcesing with event organisers to keep their international events here. Through these events, more than 25 % of visitants to Singapore were attracted due to MICE touristry. Singapore organises around 6000 of such events every twelvemonth[ 7 ], such as the 2009 APEC ( Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation ) Summit and the 2007 World Bank International Monetary Fund meeting. Raises Singapore ‘s profile in the universe, because these concern travelers would be exposed to the Singapore civilization and therefore would be more cognizant of our state. Generates gross for the touristry industry and related service suppliers. The Singapore Tourism Board estimates that by 2015, MICE touristry will lend a important 35 % of touristry gross.[ 8 ] Exhibition infinite is required for these concern events. Capital invested by the organizers to engage the needed work force and maintain and run these event infinites is diverted from local development utilizations. In the instance of a letup, the exhibition infinite is besides wasted. Need for options: We see that there was a demand for options because Singapore can non let our touristry industry to flag, due to the economical importance of our touristry industry, as established earlier. However, the effectivity of the convention, advertisement, is limited. The publicity runs conducted by STB purpose to alter favorably the tourer ‘s perceptual experience of Singapore as a tourer finish such that the person will be more likely to pick Singpore as a finish of pick. However, it was shown that merely about advertisement through the mass media merely brings in approximately 60 % of tourers. Therefore there was a demand to utilize other options to supplement the convention. Result: We see that the alternate methods have in fact rejuvenated Singapore ‘s touristry industry such that we are come oning along paths A or B on Diagram 1, because we see that visitant reachings have started on an upward tendency since 2003 and have been go oning on this tendency, which indicates that these options have been successful. I ‘m regretful, I truly can non believe of anything: ( Another manner from which we will travel on to farther measure the degree of success with mention to other lending factors in our Undertaking would be from the point of position of the assorted stakeholders in Singapore ‘s touristry industry, by measuring the impact of an increased figure of tourers to Singapore on the stakeholders, to acquire a more complete position of the impact of these options. By analyzing the benefits of advancing Singapore ‘s touristry industry to the assorted stakeholders, we see that the publicity of touristry industry in Singapore is besides similar to the publicity of Literature to Singapore ‘s young persons. Stakeholders Benefits to Stakeholder Foreign Visitors/Tourists Tourists benefit from the convenience of circuit bundles in the SEA part, because of the easiness of which they can travel from one finish to another. Furthermore, the improved touristry services will guarantee that tourers enjoy their stay more, guaranting in a higher degree of satisfaction for them. Locals Locals will be able to bask the upgraded installations, the consequence of touristry greening. These tourer attractive forces will besides hike employment in Singapore, because of the demand to engage Singaporeans to run these attractive forces, which would assist to cut down the unemployment rate in Singapore. Furthermore, when there is an increasing figure of tourers sing Singapore, the greater involvement by foreign visitants in Singapore ‘s local civilization will promote locals to be proud of this local civilization of theirs, and experience more inclined to protect it, STB A better executing tourer industry would bring forth more gross for the touristry industry in Singapore. Service Providers ( e.g. hotels ) When the tourer volume is increased, this benefits all the suppliers of subordinate services, such as hotels, because there will be a rise in the figure of tourers necessitating housing. 2nd state of affairs which can be considered in a similar manner: 2nd state of affairs: Promoting young person ‘s involvement in English Literature ( Poetry, Prose and Theatrical surveies ) Conventional manner to advance literature: 1. Humanistic disciplines trips Humanistic disciplines trips are organized by secondary schools in Singapore for pupils. These abroad trips conducted during the school vacations, present pupils with the chance to see topographic points like United Kingdom, which is one of the chief beginnings of English Literature. As the cost of the fieldtrip is partly subsidized by schools carry oning them, pupils are to a great extent encouraged to fall in in these larning journeys. The UK Literature trip is frequently conducted with the purpose to: Supply an chance for a selected group of pupils to be exposed to UK ‘s rich literacy and cultural heritage Enhance pupils ‘ apprehension of literacy genres and critical analysis accomplishments through practical unfavorable judgment and authorship exercisings Learn independency and leading accomplishments as pupils are endeavored to look after themselves and one another over the full trip Allow pupils to hold a first-hand experience and further apprehension of the lives of assorted celebrated dramatists such as William Shakespeare every bit good have sing renowned dramas in celebrated theaters. Students frequently have to finish a undertaking during or after a trip, which could be in the signifier of a presentation of their experiences there or more literature-based assignments such as composing a verse form, inspired from what they see. As there is no right or incorrect replies in literature, pupils have the freedom to exert their creativeness – in contrast to the strict and stiff course of study of other topics. This can trip an involvement in literature among pupils. However, the figure of topographic points available for such trips frequently limited to less than 50 people and therefore merely a little proportion of the cohort will be able to go to it. Furthermore, an 8 twenty-four hours trip will be a pupil approximately SGD $ 3000 after subsidy, which may discourage pupils from subscribing up for the trip. A big proportion of the pupil population will non be able to take portion in this enriching journey. 2. Integration of play into the lower secondary course of study Drama as mandatory faculty in course of study -Many secondary schools in Singapore integrated play as a compulsory faculty in lower secondary as portion of the instruction for literature. Outside trainers ( normally attached to theatre companies ) are frequently employed to run workshops for the pupils. Students have to move out parts of a drama in forepart of an audience in groups, in which they are graded for the concluding merchandise every bit good as the procedure of fixing for it. They have to carry through the different functions required in the readying of a drama such the manager and the histrions, with the aid of a instructor or trainer for counsel. This serves to: Spur pupils ‘ imaginativeness, as they may be required to improvize and compose their ain version of the dramas. Allow pupils to derive a greater penetration into the drama they are moving every bit good as into play as pupils will hold an in-depth apprehension of the drama before they are able to move it out Improve teamwork and leading accomplishments as pupil have to work in groups and settle jobs that may happen by themselves Construct up assurance Promote literature as a merriment topic that is non merely bound to the schoolroom and books Competitions -Inter-class Drama Competition can be carried out in lower secondary that allows pupils to take up specific functions of characters in the literature drama and move it out in forepart of an audience. This builds assurance in pupils every bit good as to derive a better apprehension of characters in the novel and able to analyze the text better. This builds involvement in lower secondary pupils as they get to see dramatisation of characters in the drama and learning literature through a merriment and prosecuting manner. -Literature Den Competition can be carried out in lower secondary, with the purpose of adorning the schoolroom harmonizing to a subject given. Themes include names of poets ( e.g. Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath ) or a celebrated quotation mark from a literature text. This enables us to acquire to cognize more about celebrated poets or quotation marks and it creates a new acquisition environment and raise consciousness of celebrated poets and quotation marks of the yesteryear. -Literature Broadcast Competition can be carried out for literature dramas as pupils take up a function of a character in the drama and convey feelings and messages of characters through the broadcast. This encourages pupils to be involved in broadcast medium and besides to set themselves in the places of the character and this AIDSs character analysis and hence builds up involvement in the topic. Link: Our alternate attacks for the 1st state of affairs where touristry is promoted and aliens are attracted to see Singapore to come to see and research our local civilization in bend helps in advancing our civilization and maintaining our heritage alive. This is similar to our options to advance Literature ( 2nd state of affairs ) as by promoting pupils to demo an involvement and larn more about the plants of art that gaining control niceties of people ‘s lives ( foreign and local civilization ) , we are besides assisting to advance the civilization as expressed in Literary texts. More significantly, we see that similar options can be efficaciously used in these similar state of affairss, because the effectivity of these steps can be seen through an rating of the instance survey, and because our aims for both state of affairss and the constructs behind the options are similar, this is an appropriate comparing. For our instance survey, the aim of utilizing these options was to pull more tourers to Singapore, which is similar to the aim of our application, which is to pull more local lower secondary school pupils to be interested in Literature. Furthermore, the constructs behind the several alternate attacks of altering perceptual experience and images and coactions are similar for both the instance survey and the application. Since these options were successful for the former, this shows that we can follow similar steps for the latter to successfully accomplish our aims. Why we need to see options[ 9 ]? Target Group: Lower Secondary pupils Aim: To pull more Lower Secondary pupils to show an involvement in Literature In May 1995, an article in the Straits Times suggested a diminution in literature registration for â€Å" O † degree surveies in Singapore. A turning tendency, it was reported, was for schools, required by the Ministry of Education to offer literature as a compulsory topic for the first two old ages of secondary school, to offer the topic as an option merely for Secondary 3 or 4 pupils. Even though one of the purposes of doing pupils study literature in lower secondary is to let pupils to detect the joy of literature, most pupils do non take up literature as a â€Å" O † degree topic as it seen to be a harder topic to hit good in. Hence in order to advance literature and promote more pupils to take up literature as an examinable topic in upper secondary every bit good as to better their linguistic communication and higher-order thought accomplishments, the sort of originative or critical thought necessary for Singapore ‘s hereafter as an economically developed state, our group will wish to research options to advance literature among pupils in Singapore. Alternate 1: â€Å" Makeover of Literature † A Literature is the Hagiographas in which look and signifier, in connexion with thoughts of lasting and cosmopolitan involvement, are characteristic or indispensable characteristics, as poesy, novels, history, life, and essays. Literature was seen as a depository of humanistic and religious values which might defy the pragmatism and increasing philistinism of mundane Singaporean life. Wayss to advance literature in Singapore: A Making Literature Mainstream Advertise and increase the figure of picks of books to take from so as to provide more to involvements of assorted literature partisans who have involvements in different genres e.g. horror. Ad runs can be held to alter the perceptual experience of Literature to youths in Singapore by demoing them that Literature is really non tiring as many might believe through agencies ( This is similar to the alternate attack for our 1st state of affairs where attractive forces are given makeovers to heighten their ocular entreaty to tourers ) such as new media. Puting up an online forum e.g. on Facebook where pupils can discourse Literature texts. This forum can be used by anyone, be it those who are interested in Literature or those who are merely looking about. This helps to make a common space/platform for pupils to prosecute in treatments with others sharing the same passion for the topic. Furthermore, Literature can be promoted as a topic that non merely analyse and examine texts but besides popular movies/television series. This helps in altering the typical perceptual experience of people that Literature is a deadening and irrelevant topic due to its content which focuses on dramas by William Shakespeare whose plants may non be applicable in present society. Introduce literature grasp hebdomad in schools where tickets to see dramas can be on sale to hopefully pull upon the pupils ‘ wonder of literature or their passion for it to prosecute in theatrical grasp which is an indispensable portion of Literature. By carry oning trips to research the different facets of Literature Studies, pupils will be more interested in the topic as it opens their eyes to the facets and might trip their passion for literature. Schools can besides ask for local/ abroad companies or possibly, the school ‘s play CCA to execute for the school ‘s assembly during literature grasp hebdomad so as to provide to those pupils who are unwilling or unable to watch dramas. A 2. Introduce educational games refering to literature so as to raise involvement in the topic and promote more pupils to take it as an examinable topic for national scrutinies. A An illustration is to modify board games, such as monopoly, and inculcate literature into the game. ‘Chance ‘ and ‘community chest ‘ cards can be replaced with literature quotation marks, texts or devices that may necessitate one to province the beginning of quotation mark, name a character in the book or explicate literary devices severally. These games can be used during lessons so that even if a pupil has no involvement in playing it in the first topographic point, the pupil will hold to play it. This might trip his involvement in literature. Other games such as tabu or pictionary can besides be modified, such as including quotation marks and devices in the game of tabu and pulling important scenes in a peculiar literature text in the instance of pictionary. By leting pupils to larn and derive consciousness of literature in a merriment and prosecuting mode, their involvement will be raised and they might see taking up literature as an examinable topic in their secondary and third instruction. A WOULD THE ALTERNATIVES BE SUCCESSFUL? IF SO, WOULD THE ALTERNATIVES RESULT IN A MORE SUCCESSFUL OUTCOME THAN IF THE CONVENTIONAL METHOD IS ADOPTED? The result will be successful as launching of runs will raise consciousness and facilitate acquisition of literature surveies among the pupils. To demo the success of our alternate, we could: Expression at instance surveies of other runs that were antecedently launched in Singapore. An illustration is The Speak Mandarin Campaign ( e ®?a?Ze? eaS? ) , which is a year-around run that uses promotion and activities in the community to make consciousness and to ease the acquisition of Mandarin. As portion of the run to advance greater usage, the English newspaper The Straits Times publishes day-to-day Mandarin vocabulary lessons, used Television game shows and music public presentations by local dad stars to increase consciousness in young persons. We can hence measure the success and failure of these attacks taken and see these facets while implementing our undertaking as our mark audience is similar. This can be done as it is similar Interview teachers/ forces from the English Language and Literature Teachers Association ( ELLTAS ) on the importance of fostering thought persons through taking up literature. This purpose of the interview is to help our group in deriving more cognition about the elaborate course of study of Literature surveies in Singapore and specific facets of Literature surveies that are of relevancy to pupils. By deriving this information, our group can better our option for e.g. the alteration of board games to run into the demands of the topic. Surveies can be carried out to happen out if pupils are willing/ unwilling to choose for literature as an examinable topic and why/why non. Suggestions to increase registration of literature pupils can besides be seek for in the studies. Sample Survey Purpose: To happen out pupils ‘ current perceptual experiences and apprehension of Literature Target Group: Secondary school and Junior College Students No. Question 1 Presently, what degree are you analyzing at? Lower Secondary Upper Secondary Junior College None of the above If ( a ) , delight skip to Question 3. 2 Are you studying/Do you plan to analyze Literature as an examinable topic at the ‘A ‘ Levels? For illustration, would you take part in events organized to observe Literature or play games designed with elements of Literature in it? Very Supportive Supportive Slightly Unsupportive Very unsupportive Alternate 2: â€Å" Collaboration † Wayss to advance literature in Singapore: In our 2nd option, our group proposes that schools tie-up with art administrations and local authors/poets.A The event, in the signifier of a just, will be held in secondary schools with the mark audience being lower secondary school pupils who are hesitating over their capable combination options. The timeframe of the event will be one twenty-four hours during school course of study, sooner after the end-of-year scrutinies of lower secondary school pupils so that they will hold more free clip due to more flexible timetables after scrutinies. The carnival will include activities go arounding around literature grasp. Besides being able to bask the public presentations, pupils will be given the chances to travel wing to larn more about the humanistic disciplines such as presenting inquiries to the performing artists etc. This construct of supplying a carnival will be new as our group aims to suggest a alone blend of local and foreign literature show windows coupled with dramas and public presentations put up by theatrical companies to be catered for schools ( content will be sooner related to the pupils ‘ coursework ) .A There will besides be coaction between schools and local writers and poets where they will be invited to put up booths at these carnivals and to offer pupils with relevant replies on inquiries asked regarding Literature. By supplying pupils the context of Literature through the position of the local poets/authors, the pupils will be exposed to a more interesting point of view of the topic. A The general diminution in literature registration for â€Å" O † degree surveies in Singapore has provoked a minute of contemplation about the function of literature in Singapore society. Public figures commented on the utility of literature ; school instructors, applied scientists, and physicians wrote letters and Straits Times columnist Ravi Veloo proposed that â€Å" O † degree literature be made compulsory for all pupils. Therefore ; our option will take to work hand-in-hand with lifting recognition of the importance to advance literature in Singapore. We will be forming this event in schools who are advocates of the point of view of the importance of Literature from the fact that literature can be seen as a depository of humanistic and religious values which might defy the pragmatism and increasing philistinism of mundane Singaporean life. Besides, the publicity of Literature can be seen as encouraging higher-order thought accomplishments, the sort of originative o r critical thought necessary for Singapore ‘s hereafter as an economically developed state. Aside from the chief mark audience of lower secondary school pupils, upper secondary pupils who are interested to heighten their cognition and involvement for Literature are besides encouraged and invited to take portion in the event. A An illustration of a play studio that can be considered for coaction is Drama Box. Their educational arm, NeNeMa, have conducted synergistic dramas for schools every bit good as workshops specially tailored for pupils, instructors and corporate clients utilizing. Within a short 6-month period in 2004, they have reached more than 5,000 pupils and 400 instructors through their dramas and workshops1.Their popularity among school populations substantiates their professionalism in carry oning dramas. Therefore, Drama Box serves to be a good pick of organisation to near should our group decides to transport out a pilot trial in which the carnival would be held. A On the other manus, an writer that could be approached for coaction with schools is Mr Tan Swie Hian, who in 1987 and 1998 severally, was awarded the Cultural Medallion in Singapore and won the Marin Sorescu International Poetry Prize in Romania.A The principle behind this attack is to perchance trip students’A involvement in literature, as in today ‘s society, literature is being overlooked invariably due to the outgrowth of popular civilization. By utilizing this attack, we hope that literature will one time once more go popular with today ‘s youth.A In order to demo if this attack is successful, we can inquire the authors/poets for the figure of pupils who signed up for their classs and we can give out studies to the pupils to acquire their sentiment about such events which aim to advance literature.A A restriction is that the authors/poets might non be free to carry on such things such as the authorship classs. In order to get the better of this, we can seek to reach literature instructors who might be willing to make such things due to their strong passion in learning and distributing his/her love for literature to the following coevals. WOULD THE ALTERNATIVE BE SUCCESSFUL? IF SO, WOULD THIS ALTERNATIVE RESULT IN A MORE SUCCESSFUL OUTCOME THAN IF THE CONVENTIONAL METHOD IS ADOPTED? The result will be successful as coaction with humanistic disciplines organisation and local authors/poets in forming carnivals perverts from conventional methods of learning which pupils find deadening or uncreative. By broadening the types of learning methods employed, pupils will break appreciate the topic as a whole and be more interested in the topics as rigidness in the course of study is eliminated. This alternate attack will be more successful than the conventional manner as it caters to a larger group of mark audience. Unlike the Literature trip which merely a little selected group of pupils can be offered the chance, the coaction with local poets/authors caters to more pupils and is larger-scale and more encompassing that the conventional method. Primary research methodological analysis: Collaborate with local authors/poets to organize interaction Sessionss at schools to advance literature. Conduct study to see what pupils feel about such Sessionss and how the session has changed how they view literature. Conduct interviews with authors/poets to acquire their sentiments on how literature has affected society over the old ages ( or frailty versa ) , how literature can be farther promoted, etc. A How to cite Alternatives To Promote Literature Education Essay, Essay examples

32342343242342 Essay Example For Students

32342343242342 Essay Knowing about the body systems is important. When you know about your body, youll be more healthy than if you didnt. Any sport player needs to know and understand how all his muscles work, so when it comes to exercise or working out, they can know what their limits are. The skeletal system is made up of your bones, ligaments, and tendons. It determines the shape and symmetry of the body; acts as a protective device for your organs; acts as a firm base for the attachments of muscles (without bones, your muscles would not function properly); and the marrow tissues in the cavity of the bones produces red cells and some white cells, required in your blood. Humans have an endoskeleton, meaning that the skeleton is located inside of the body. It consists of about 200 bones. The number of bones varies, because some bones fuse at different periods of time. Most bones are hollow with marrow bones inside. Ligaments connect bones to bones, and tendons connect bones to muscles. The human skeleton is divided into an appendicular skeleton (bones of arms and legs or appendages), and the axial skeleton (skull, backbone or vertebrae)The human body contains more than 650 individual muscles which are attached to the skeleton, which provides the pulling power for us to move around. The main job of the muscular system is to provide movement for the body. The muscular system consists of three different types of muscle tissues: skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscles. Each of these different tissues has the ability to contract, which then allows body movements and functions. There are two types of muscles in the system and they are the voluntary and involuntary muscles. The muscles that we are allowed to control ourselves are called the voluntary muscles. The muscles we cant control are called the involuntary muscles. The heart, or the cardiac muscle, is an example of involuntary muscles. The human nervous system is responsible for sending, receiving, and processing nerve impulses throughout the body. All the organs and muscles inside your body rely upon these nerve impulses to function. It could be considered as the master control unit inside of your body. Sense organs provide the nervous system with information about the environment by means of such senses as sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, pressure, and pain. Nerves are connected throughout the whole body to the brain. They carry the information throughout the body in the form of electrochemical signals called impulses. These impulses travel from the brain and spinal cord to the nerves located throughout the body. It is largely made up of specialized cells called neurons. Each of these neurons has a cell body, or cyton, which contains the nucleus and organelles. It takes the corporation of three systems to carry out the mission of the nervous system. They are the central, the peripheral, and the autonomic nerv ous systems. The endocrine system is a collection of special organs in the body that produce hormones. Theses organs are usually called the glands. They are located in different parts of the body. For example, the pituitary is in the brain, the thyroid is in the neck, the adrenal glands are in the kidneys, and the sexual glands (ovaries and testes) are located in the sexual organs. Each gland releases a hormone into the blood, which travels all through the body. Hormones regulate our body activities, for example: growth, sleep, sudden actions, feelings and blood sugar for energy. The digestive system contains organs for changing food chemically for absorption by body tissues. It is also responsible for processing food, breaking it down into usable proteins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, and other substances. The digestion process involves breaking food into simple soluble substances absorbable by tissues. .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03 , .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03 .postImageUrl , .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03 , .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03:hover , .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03:visited , .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03:active { border:0!important; } .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03:active , .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03 .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u14dc4b9bd929622f1a1d72ce3d9f9c03:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Wwii (690 words) EssayThe digestion process includes both mechanical and chemical processes. The mechanical processes include chewing to reduce food into smaller particles, the churning actions of the stomach, and the intestinal peristaltic action. Three different chemical reactions take place: conversions of carbohydrates into such simple sugars as glucose, breaking down of protein into amino acids, and the conversion of fats into fatty acids and glycerol. These processes are accomplished by specific enzymes. The respiratory systems main task is to supply oxygen to the blood and to get

Macbeth Character Essays (1253 words) - Characters In Macbeth

Macbeth Character "This dead butcher and his fiend like queen", is the way in which Malcolm describes Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Describe the way in which these two characters changed during the course of the play. At the beginning of the play Macbeth is seen as a courageous soldier who is loyal to the King but is corrupted from the witches prophecies and by his and Lady Macbeth's ambition. This is because of the weakness of Macbeth's character and the strong power of Lady Macbeth and how she is easily able to influence him. Her strength motivates him at the start but after he realises what he has done it is himself that continues in his murderous, bloody path. At the beginning of the play Lady Macbeth appears as a kind wife of Macbeth's but underneath lies a scheming and treacherous woman. In the beginning of the play Macbeth is a strong soldier who fights for the King without mercy but his strive for ambition and his curious nature leads him to the witches who give him a prophecy. Banquo realises that there must be a trick hidden in the witches prophecies somewhere but Macbeth refuses to accept that, and when Lady Macbeth finds out about the witches her strong desire for ambition and her cold nature leads Macbeth astray. Macbeth is a little ambitious at first, but Lady Macbeth's far exceeds his and so she is able to get Macbeth to agree with her to kill King Duncan. Macbeth still has a conscience at this stage because he is very hesitant about killing the King but his weak nature over comes him. He has a conscience throughout the entire play as this is seen by the hallucinations of the dagger and the ghost of Banquo and his vivid imagination and his constant worry also provokes him. This is also evident in his terrible dreams which gives the solid theme that he has indeed "murdered sleep". Throughout the play we see the character of Macbeth change not from just the way he thinks and what we hear from the play, but from the actions he takes in the play, from killing Banquo, then having Lady Macduff and her children murdered, shows the insecurity that was present in Macbeth. After the murder of Duncan Macbeth becomes paranoid and his first step of killing the guards is one of many that Macbeth takes to secure himself. Macbeth is also very superstitious and this is shown when he believes the prophecy the witches told him that Banquo's offspring would become Kings. Towards the end of the play when Macbeth's wife has died and the battle is drawing closer Macbeth shows some good which may have been. He wishes for a normal life for which he would have lived to an honourable age but he recognises that he has denied himself of this. Even when Macbeth hears that the prophecy has become true of Birnam Wood coming to Dunsinane, he rejects this idea and fights on until he realises that Macduff wasn't born in a natural birth but instead was "Untimely ripped" from his mother's womb. When Macbeth hears of this he realises what he has done and how he has been tricked by the witches but instead he realises that it is useless and so he fights on only to be slain. Macbeth can be summarised into a character although strong physically he is very weak mentally and it is this weakness which causes the downfall and change of Macbeth. Other factors do however also contribute to this change such as his wife whose ambition is very strong at first and is much more stronger mentally than Macbeth but it is also Macbeth's ambition and his trust in the witches which ultimately change him. Lady Macbeth seems to be almost opposite compared to that of Macbeth in physical and mental power. Lady Macbeth is the person who is able to persuade Macbeth into killing Duncan, assuring Macbeth that it will succeed, as Lady Macbeth's ambition is far greater than that of Macbeth. This change in the character of Lady Macbeth is apparent after she reads the letter from Macbeth as she goes and talks to the evil spirits to make herself evil with lines such as "Fill me from the crown to the toe-top full of direst cruelty! Make thick my blood". She goes to the extent of planning the murder of Duncan and assumes full responsibility of this. She exerts a lot of power over Macbeth in this

Target Human Resources †Business Research Paper (300 Level Course)

Target Human Resources – Business Research Paper (300 Level Course) Free Online Research Papers Target Human Resources Business Research Paper(300 Level Course) The life blood of any large corporation is a well trained and adequately staffed work force. At Target Corporation, there is no exception to this rule. Target Corporation is a quickly growing company who boasts 1400 stores in the United States with plans of opening 600 new stores in the next 4 years. This quick expansion requires a great deal of planning and commitment from the human resources department to ensure that there is adequate staffing in place run these new stores. In the following paper, I will discuss Target’s staffing practices in regards to the trends of diversity and technology. As an assistant manager at Target Corporation, one of my many â€Å"out of the store† responsibilities is my commitment to our districts executive hiring committee. This hiring committee consists of 10 assistants that recruit, interview and hire new executive team members for the North and South Carolina districts. There are three reasons a committee like this is necessary. Each store has a minimum of 5 executives, depending on store sales volume. With 4 new stores planned in Charlotte alone going up in the next 2 years, a surplus of executives is the key to future success. Continually hiring executives accounts for store personnel leaving, either on their own accord or due to termination. Another reason accounts for team members who are relocated due to promotions and special projects. As a member of this hiring committee, diversity has been a large topic of conversation for us as a committee and is one of many quantitative numbers that the team gets evaluated on. Diversity of Target’s executive staff plays a large role in the success that Target has enjoyed since its beginning. Having a diverse management staff allows store teams to better relate to the populous of the surrounding areas of the building; which will effect the relationships within the work staff and management and the work staff and the customers who shop at the store. The leader of the hiring committee has given the team suggested guidelines to follow for staffing each store executive staff with a widely diversified group. Having a team diverse in gender is one of the first challenges we face. Generalized differences are identified in the approaches of women and men to definition of the job, overall style, decision making and interpersonal relationships. This means that men and women inherently have advantages and disadvantages in terms of management skill and styles. Having a good mix of both men and women in each store as managers allows the executive staff to learn and count on each other in times of turmoil and strife. Similar effects can be seen in cultural differences as well. Target employs more than 300,000 team members in 47 states, 63 percent of whom are women and 37 percent of whom are minorities. In its legal department, attorneys are a direct reflection of the diversity initiatives it supports and the culture it has helped create. Women make up more than half of its attorneys and minorities consist of more than 10 percent. One tool we use as a group to hire diversity is to run help wanted ads in culturally specific news papers and publications such as EL Progreso Hispano News here in Charlotte. We also have been involved with minority groups at local colleges such as UNCC and CPCC to try to attract a diverse work groups. Another interesting trend in the hiring process at Target is it’s use of technology in the hiring process. Target, in general, has used technology in many aspects of it’s business model to gain dominance in the cut throat market of retail. At the beginning of a candidates job interview process, they must complete a job application and personality examination. This process can be done either at application kiosks at the store or at home on the internet. All applications and personality examination results are accessible to store executives in a web based data base program called Target Job Application System, or JAS. All applications can be viewed and organized by any one or list of determinants such as availability, education, desired job and many more. This allows for quick access to applicants that can fill a specific job or duty in the store. This same program grades personality examinations, reports on back ground check information and results of drug tests given to candidate who have been offered a job. JAS has quickly proven itself as a useful tool in the challenge of staffing a Target store. Another interesting technological break through Target uses to staff its stores is called SHARP, or Store Allocation and Resource Planning. SHARP is a computer program that has two main duties each week. The first thing SHARP does is produces a schedule each week for the entire work force of each building. The second, and more important function in regards to this paper, is the function of forecasting sales and personnel needs that are specific to each store in the chain. Sharp calculates current sales trends, current staff including availabilities and upcoming work loads and produces a suggested number of payroll hours allocated as well as a staffing minimum for each department in the store. Each Target store has a small human resource department headed by a manager know as the team relations leader. As a former TRL, it was imperative for me to follow the guidelines set by SHARP in order to appropriately staff my building. This program is also effective in planning seasonal staffing needs such as Christmas. Sales and jump 500% in on week during the holidays and it is difficult to guess how much staff is actually needed to run business at that level, SHARP makes it easy. Of course exceptions will be made and the computer program cannot account for all factors, especially the human ones, but the system is a great tool to use to get a good idea of where an individual store should be in terms of staffing minimums. Target Corporation understands that the company is only as good as the people who work in the stores. Target puts much focus on staffing its stores with not only the correct amount of people, but also the right people who can work together and merge together as a team. Much planning and payroll hours are spent in the HR departments to ensure that we as managers are focusing on the right tools in terms of the work force in the building. With tools we can use such as technology and our intense focus on diversity, Target hopefully with have a strong future ahead. A Series Of Unfortunate Events, Analysis

A Series Of Unfortunate Events, Analysis This movie tells about The Baudelaires orphans: Violet; Klaus; and Sunny. Violet is fourteen years old, Klaus is twelve years old, and Sunny is still an infant. Each of these orphans has awesome ability: Violet can find and create everything from the things around her as good as a scientist; Klaus loves reading so much and amazingly he remembers all what he read even in details; and then Sunny, the youngest, her teeth are so strong and she bites almost everything. Their parents are killed in a fire that also destroyed their house. Mr. Poe, the family banker, then sends the children to live with Count Olaf, an actor who is their closest relative. Count Olaf treats the children awfully. Soon The Baudelaires know that Count Olaf just wants to take their parents’ richness. One time because of a coincidence, Mr. Poe thinks that Count Olaf is not a responsible parent so that Mr. Poe takes back the children from Count Olaf. Olaf, pretending to have an emotional goodbye with The Baud elaires, promises that he will find them again and get their fortune. Mr. Poe sends the children to live with their uncle, Dr. Montgomery Montgomery, a cheerfully herpetologist. The Baudelaires live happily with Uncle Monty. Nonetheless, Count Olaf comes in disguise to Uncle Monty’s house as his new assistant for herpetology and he killed Uncle Monty. The orphans are then sent to live with Aunt Josephine who lives in a house on the edge of a cliff above the Lake Lachrymose. However, Count Olaf catches the children wherever they go in order to get an opportunity to grab the Baudelaires’ wealth. He does camouflages to fool other guardians of the Baudelaires. Count Olaf causes the death of Aunt Josephine and makes himself as if he is the children’s savior. As a result, Mr. Poe gives custody back to Count Olaf, seeing how he rescued the children. Mr. Poe reveals to Count Olaf that he would not inherit the children’s fortune even if they died, with the excepti on of blood relatives, or married couples. Count Olaf invites Mr. Poe and people he knows to his play which stars himself and Violet as the leads. It is a trap for the Baudelaires so that Count Olaf can gain access to Violet’s inheritance. Klaus notices Count Olaf’s bad plan. Somehow he ruins the play and makes people realize the tyranny of Count Olaf and then arrest him. Moreover, Klaus notices that the death of his parents is not merely an accident, but it was Count Olaf’s deed. Eventually, the Baudelaires are safe and kept away from Count Olaf. The reason the writer choose this movie to be analyzed is because the writer is indeed interested in this movie from the first time the writer saw it. This movie is one of 21th century literary works which depicts chains of a unique story which is not clichà ©. From its title, it is discernible that this movie imparts a kind of tragedy which involves life/moral values. Moreover, it involves the hamartia, anagnorisis, peripeteia, and catharsis. This is why the writer decides to use Aristotelian theory to analyze this movie, because hamartia, anagnorisis, peripeteia, and catharsis are the key elements of the theory.

None Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 5

None - Essay Example This paper will briefly describe the characteristic features of the Great Depression, compare the approaches of Hoover and Roosevelt to the economic and social turmoil, and explain Roosevelt's New Deal responses to the crisis. As a preliminary matter, the Great Depression was characterized by unprecedented levels of consumer debt, a decrease in international trade in the wake of the first World War, price deflation which compelled both individual and business debtors to cut spending while attempting to service higher than anticipated debt payments, a liquidity crisis which saw the money supply contract rather than expand, and a stock market crash as equity failed to yield anticipated returns (Bernstein, 1989: 33-35). In effect, stating the matter rather simply, money was disappearing on the income or loan side at the same time that debts and expenses were increasing. The consequences were disastrous. Unemployment increased, bankruptcies became commonplace, and huge migrations occurred as people sought new opportunities. There were too few resources for too many people; and where there were adequate resources; they were not allocated equally. President Hoover failed to grasp the pervasive nature of the economic failings; on the contrary, rather than approaching the crisis from a structural point of view, he chose to deal only with the more superficial symptoms of the crisis. More specifically, espousing a philosophical role of government which remained detached and aloof, Hoover refused to involve the government more directly into the market economy or social welfare. He was, in this way, a regulatory minimalist and he trusted that the business cycle and the American work ethic would sort out the crisis without substantial governmental intervention (Kennedy, 199: 56). These views became manifest as a policy of "avowed cooperation"; more particularly, Hoover encouraged certain reforms, such as bank deposit insurance, without supporting any more specific or comprehensive reforms. He was, in the final analysis, extraordinarily passive and ineffective in dealing with the scale of the disaster. President Roosevelt, on the other hand, was much more active and advocated a direct and deep intervention by the federal government. To this end, Roosevelt pursued structural reform, a broader notion of social welfare, and a governmental role in the economy which would increase demand and create jobs by entering into infrastructure contracts and becoming an active economic actor alongside individuals and businesses (Bremer, 1975: 642). Roosevelt distrusted both the free market and businesses in the forms espoused by theoretical purists; as a result, he approached the crisis from the point of view of the federal government helping to manage the business cycle and keeping the excesses of greed and capitalism at bay. Roosevelt was thus a reaction to the passivity and detachment of Hoover; his programs, incorporated as a part of the New Deal and the Second New Deal, remain important parts of our governmental structure and philosophy even today. The New Deal dealt first and foremost with restoring the integrity and the health of America's financial system; Roosevelt was thus forced to reform the powerful banks on Wall Street and elsewhere. American Eagle Marketing - Research Paper Example Airline operation is dependent upon many related entities; the primary ones are airport authorities which allow the airlines to carry out the operation at the particular station. The catering service providers along with aircraft equipment manufacturers and suppliers also play contributory role in the operation. In case of American Eagle, it is quite possible that the flight frequency is restricted at a particular station. The aircraft manufacturer may also enforce strict conditions for aircraft maintenance. Customer’s Bargaining PowerAviation industry is strongly characterized by time based fares which enable the customers to fly cheap if they plan their journey well ahead of time. The threat of customer’s bargaining power is limited as the pricing is purely online and regulated by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).Threat of SubstituteIt is a serious point of consideration for American Eagle as many low cost carriers can threat its profitability. It goes without saying that there is no substitute of air travel in the aspect of time and ease. The drawback can be in terms of connections to multiple stations and the facilities provided during transit if direct flight is not operated.Threat of New EntrantAs mentioned earlier, entry of new low cost carriers can threaten the business of American Eagle. The low cost carrier saves cost on catering, in flight entertainment and baggage limit. They focus on the basic requirement of air travel which is quick transportation of individuals and baggage.

Hermaphrodites and Society Essay Example for Free

Hermaphrodites and Society Essay Individuals are given the gift of life when they are born into this world. Many agree that everyone is blessed and should not take their lives for granted. To be truly alive, individuals must be overjoyed and pursue happiness. However, others would describe their lives as a joke. To be precise, many would be ashamed of who they are. A very strong example of an ashamed soul would be Calliope, the main protagonist of Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. In the story, Eugenides tells the tale of Callie, who is supposedly a monster because she is a hermaphrodite. Being a hermaphrodite indicates that someone has the sex organs associated with both genders. By definition, Callie is an abnormal freak. Eugenides employs literary devices, such as tone, imagery, and personification, to express Callie’s shame and humiliation of being herself. Eugenides employs imagery to transport readers into Callie’s shoes and understand her shame of being a hermaphrodite. Callie describes herself as â€Å"being surrounded by illuminating faces bent over books, her hair covering the definition of herself. Normal individuals surround Callie, and she abruptly conceals the word monster to prevent anyone from realizing her true identity. In Callie’s point of view, normal individuals surround her, and she is in the center covering a secret that could ultimately ruin her reputation as a human. Callie is so frightened of being exposed to the world as a true monster. Callie makes a past reference of how she had experienced monster before. Callie addresses that â€Å"she was not looking at it in her bathroom stall. † She has the affirmation that someone had already known her as a monster, but she was too afraid to agree. Now, however, Callie is reminded of her past, and sadly acquaints past and present to reach the conclusion the she is indeed a monster. Callie also refers to herself as a â€Å"lumbering, shaggy creature pausing at the edge of the woods, as a humped convolvulus rearing its dragon’s head from an icy lake. † Callie truly visualizes herself as an actual monster, a freak of nature that is shunned by the world and lives in absolute seclusion. In her eyes, she is a grotesque beast that cannot even stand to stare at herself out of humiliation and shame. Callie is absolutely alone and is surrounded by others who look at her with disgust and wide eyes. Eugenides utilizes tone in the story to help readers develop sympathy and pity towards Callie. All throughout the passage, the tone of the story is serious. Callie acknowledges that â€Å"her mother was crying in the next room, and the doctors were working on Callie’s disease in secret. † The statements convey that Callie’s parents are also disappointed and ashamed of what their daughter has become. Callie understands that her mother sheds tears thinking what she has done to deserve a defected daughter. Callie’s parents are so ashamed and overwhelmed that they took Callie to New York to try and heal in secret instead of in the open. Callie’s parents do not want others to see what has happened to her out of concern for their daughter’s social life as a normal individual. The thoughts and emotions expressed give readers pity towards Callie and her condition. Callie muses that â€Å"she longed to be held, caressed, which was impossible. † Callie wishes to be comforted and surrounded by others that loved and understood her. Unfortunately, Callie views herself so much like a monster rather than an individual that she is too far long to be comforted by anyone. Readers infer that Callie is a freak with no friends, family, or loved ones. Eugenides also uses personification to display how Callie views the inhumane objects around her as also excluding her from humanity and pushing her towards being a monster. Callie enunciates that â€Å"fear is stabbing me. † Callie feels horrible about her discovery of being a hermaphrodite; she actually visualizes fear around her. Callie feels frightened and vulnerable to the thought of others singling her out and chanting the monster. Callie cannot even comprehend what she feels, but can only implore she is engulfed by fear and incapable of accepting her secret getting out. This also expresses Callie’s extreme shame of being who she is, as well as how others will view her as a non –human. Callie comments on the chain within the dictionary as â€Å"speaking of poverty, mistrust, inequality, and decadence as she held onto it. † Callie establishes a connection between herself and the chain as both being bound to the worst parts of human lives. Callie strongly grasps the word monster in her hand, as if she is bound to it like the chain is. Callie cannot detach herself because deep in her heart, she understands that she is a monster, no matter how much she wishes not to be. As Callie leaves the Reading Room, Callie also cannot release the word monster from herself. Callie appeals that â€Å"the Webster’s dictionary kept calling after her, Monster, Monster! † Callie is so attached and strongly understands herself as a monster that she hears the word everywhere she goes. No matter where Callie goes, the word monster will always haunt and pursue her, always reminding her of what she is. Callie interprets the chants of inanimate objects calling her monster, and she cannot help but feel ashamed and humiliated to be reminded of what she is. Calliope, all throughout the passage, is a hermaphrodite and a monster. A world of normal individuals surrounds Callie and do not understand what she is. Eugenides uses literary devices, such as imagery, tone, and personification to express Callie’s shame and humiliation of being herself. To be alive is truly a blessing, but is being abnormal in the eyes of peers a curse? Everywhere, there are individuals who are terrified and alone, and sometimes, no one comes to help them. Regardless of who they are, or whether they may be different, everyone belongs. No one is a monster.

Changes in Packaging over the Years Essay

Packaging is generally crumpled, creased, folded, bundled, binned, shredded, sorted, sometimes recycled, and often cast aside. Whether the protective material is corrugate, Styrofoam peanuts, or sealed air, consumers are largely indifferent, only the product nestled inside matters. Consumers are not alone. Packaging rarely receives the attention demand planning, materials sourcing, manufacturing, transportation, distribution, and return logistics enjoy. For some manufacturers, however, product packaging has redeeming value. Ensuring customers receive what they order in mint condition and at minimal cost is the mark of a well- thought-out strategy. Packaging of fruits and vegetables is undertaken primarily to assemble the production in convenient units for marketing and distribution. In my opinion, fruits and vegetables should be taken care of the most when it comes to packaging. They are very rich source of minerals and vitamins and people depend on them for many benefits so packagin g can definitely affect it. The increased production of fruits and vegetables and other agricultural production will be fully realized only when they reach the consumer in good condition and at a reasonable price. The present packaging systems for fresh vegetables is unscientific. Uses of traditional forms of packages like bamboo baskets are still prevalent. Other types of packages generally used are wooden boxes and gunnysacks. Use of corrugated fiber board boxes is limited. Baskets besides being unhygienic also do not allow adequate aeration and convenience of easy handling and stocking. Better packaging should be of immediate value in reducing waste; for example edible packaging which can be eaten after using. Milk packaging has had a good recycling rate in the past, with glass bottles having the ability to be reused up to 40 times before needing to be recycled. The majority of milk being sold through supermarkets where a variety of packaging formats have been used including Tetra Pak cartons and low density polyethylene plastic milk containers but the latest method of packaging is using plastic bags. The co-operative launched eco-pouches aimed at environmentally conscious customers who were trying to reduce the plastic garbage. As the initial response was positive, the milk bag was awarded the ‘Best New Product’ at the 2008 Green Business Awards. However, due to poor demand for the milk bags a lot of milk remained  unsold, resulting in losses to the company so they stopped selling milk in eco pouches. While plastic milk cartons were declared to be recycled successfully, estimates suggested only one in four was recycled. It’s now purchased in 1L bags to fit a reusable plastic jug, which must be purchased separately. The jug can fit into any refrigerator door and can store 75 empty eco-packs. Once the bag is placed in the jug, a corner is snipped off with scissors and when the bag is empty it can be recycled. Plastic furniture gained a lot of popularity over the last few years. People realized that it has a lot of advantages over wooden furniture. They are tough and durable, anti corrosive, light weight, maintenance free, and they have a better pleasing appearance. However, Plastic doors are not suitable for entry doors as they are of very light weight and not weather proof as wooden or metal doors are. Cardboard is a heavy paper-like material. There is still not complete and uniform usage. Often the term â€Å"cardboard† is avoided because it does not define any particular material. The first corrugated cardboard box manufactured in the USA was in 1895. By the early 1900s, wooden crates and boxes were being replaced by corrugated paper shipping cartons and these are the well-known cardboard boxes we all know and use today. Plastic bags differ in many ways such that if a consumer only uses a conventional HDPE plastic bag just once (say to carry their groceries home before throwing the bag away), a paper bag would have to be reused 3 times, a heavy-duty plastic bag made from Low-Density Polyethylene would have to be used 4 times, a plastic â€Å"bag-for-life† made of non-woven Polypropylene would have to be used 11 times, and a cotton (or canvas) bag would need to be re-used 131 times. With that as a reference, a cotton/cloth canvas bag user does over twice the damage to the environment that a plastic bag using grocery shopper who throws away every plastic bag they get immediately after each shopping trip, as they will likely have to replace their more environmentally destructive bag at least once long before they reach 131 uses. When companies have conditions such as high volume shipments, worker safety, or ergonomic issues, they may be in good positions to take advantage of the savings by using Reusable Packaging. Reusable Packaging benefits include direct savings in packaging purchase and disposal as a result of repeated reuse. Higher initial purchase price translates into  a lower cost per trip through repeated reuse. Other economic benefits can come through productivity gains where reusable packaging better addresses the needs of the work process, such as through design for better parts presentation. Reusable packaging is also associated with better protection of parts and reduced damage. Pyramids made of (natural materials) wooden and fiberglass have been used to understand this energy. Square and octagonal shapes of pyramids with different sizes have been used in this study in an attempt to analyze preservation of milk kept under the pyramids for a period of 14 days. Some of the bacteria that grow in milk were counted by repeated sampling of milk covered by the pyramids and compared with a milk sample kept without a pyramid. Individual bacterial counts and total bacterial plate counts were obtained and the results tabulated. Pyramids made of natural materials have shown better energies than synthetic materials. Pyramids are a source of an unknown form of energy, which has unique capabilities of preservation. Nowadays, the difference between products are getting less and less so competition is getting more and more which forces companies to compete on something other than the product itself. That is when Packaging comes in the picture. If almost all of the products are the same, I, as a consumer, will pick my product depending on how it will benefit me later on. If a glass is reusable, it will most likely be the one I pick.

Agribusiness Policy and the Business Environment

Dairy farming is one of the key areas of Agribusiness sector. One subgroup of this dairy farming is the raw milk business, which is the focus area of business in this report. The raw milk business is a very unique business area because of its frequent clashes with the government, and the very strict regulation under which it operates. The business is analyzed by using a fictitious company names Organo-Milk. The company can be thought of as a typical medium scale business enterprise, which is one of the common scenarios in this business are. The problems outlined for this company are typical of other similar sized companies in the raw mil business, and have led to many of the companies being closed down. The surviving companies are either very large cooperatives like Horizon Organic, or innovative companies like Organic Pastures, the latter being the chief focus of this study. Through the fictitious company, the raw milk business will be analyzed and some strategic options would be outl ined, which can be utilized for other similar companies in the business. The report first gives the introduction of Organo-Milk, then gives a detailed explanation of the US government policy regarding raw milk, then explores the business environment of the company, and finally takes all these inputs to give strategic solution for the company under focus.Introduction  The company under analysis here is a fictitious company with the name Organo-Milk. The company is modeled after the company Organic Pastures, and makes raw dairy milk and related products. The raw dairy products are the dairy foods that are unprocessed artificially for instance by using processes such as pasteurizing, heating, or chemically treating etc.Even the cows used in the farms are nor given antibiotics, hormones or GMOs i.e., Genetically Modified Organisms for producing more or better grade of milk. Instead they are given naturopathic treatments and are fed using organic green pastures only (Organic Pastures: Pr oducts, n.d., para 1).Like Organic pastures. Organo-Milk is also considered as a family owned company with the main organizational positions shared between different family members. Organo-Milk is based in the California state in the United States. This makes the company along with Organic Pastures, â€Å"one of the few remaining family-owned and operated dairies in California† (Organic Pastures: Organic pastures dairy Company, n.d., para 1).The company is assumed to have been set up formally in the early 1990s, and the founding members still hold crucial positions in the company, and are responsible for most of the day to day decisions and company operations. The staff working with the company has also been with them from the very start, with few instances of permanent employees leaving the farm. Most of the people employed on the farm live in the neighboring areas with very few instances of immigrant labor, though there are a fair number of labors who are drifters, ready to w ork as temporary employees for a couple of months. The company follows a very personal approach in its dairy farming operations. The products of Organo-Milk are kept similar to Organic Pastures, and are as below: ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Milk – As is mentioned above the company produces raw milk which contains natural occurring bacteria, beneficial to health, other necessary organic compounds like amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants etc. ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Butter – The butter made by the company is also raw butter, which is merely the fat part of the raw milk, and is made from churned cream without any additional ingredients like salt or colorings. ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Cream – Cream produced by the company s just the raw cream skimmed from the raw milk, and there is not chemical process involved during the sequence. ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Cheese – The raw cheese p roduced by the company is probably the most treated of all the products. The cheese is heated to a temperature around 100 degrees Fahrenheit to make the process optimized and faster. ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Colostrum – This is the food which a mother cow produces to strengthen their new born calves and is an attraction to people who like dairy products.(Organic Pastures: Organic pastures dairy Company, n.d., para 1)The products produced are generally known as organic in the market mainly because of their non-use of any hormones and chemicals during and after the milking process. The milk and milk products which follow this process come at a premium price, and are popular among people as ‘real’ dairy farm products. The companies however, are almost always under controversies regarding safe practices, the treatment of animals on farms and what constitutes the exact definition of organic foods. Even larger corporations like Horizon Organic and Aurora Organic Dairy face these issues.

Sex and Gender Families and Aging essays

Sex and Gender Families and Aging essays Just 20 years ago, in most states a woman could not sign an apartment lease, get a credit rating, or apply for a loan unless her husband or a male relative agreed to share the responsibility. Similarly, a 1965 study found that fifty one percent of men though women were "temperamentally unfit for management." There can be no doubt that we have progressed a long way from these ideas in the last three decades. However, it is also unquestionable that women in the work force are still discriminated against, sexually harassed, paid less than men, and suffer from occupational sex segregation and fears of failure as well as fears of success. We will address all of these concerns in this paper, and look at some well-known court cases as illustrations. In May 1989, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Price Waterhouse had based its decision on unlawful sex stereotyping. The decision shifted the legal burden of proof to the employer, which should make it easier for employees to win future Title VII cases. Experts say that the decision's main affect may be to force companies to eliminate bias in the people making important personnel decisions for them. The decision was a landmark for anti-discrimination, but we should not overemphasize its power. Even now, after a long and expensive court battle, only twenty eight of Price Waterhouse's nine hundred partners are women. One avenue of reform which the U.S. Supreme Court has long supported is the use of affirmative action plans. On March 25, 1987 the court ruled that the public transportation agency of Santa Clara County, California was justified in given a road dispatcher's job to Diana Joyce rather than a man. Joyce scored two points lower on a test than the man did, but a panel of supervisors found her to be otherwise just as qualified. The decision was based on the fact that the agency's affirmative action plan met the court's three criteria for fairness. The plan was flexible, temporary, and ...

Reading response - Assignment Example Sagoff however, argues against this idea (Sagoff 2). Sagoff states that animals and trees can be given the same rights as human beings (3). It further states that it is hard to protect animals just because they are capable of suffering. In his argument against environmentalism, he gives an example that if man is to be prevented from hunting a deer, then a cat should also not hunt a mouse. This, the author says is one of the reasons why environmentalism principle cannot be fully implemented. He also argues against the claim by this group that groups and organizations like the Wildlife Fund have failed in their duties. Sagoff indicates that the duties of such organizations are based on biological factors and not on total environmentalism. The second group which the author talks about is the liberators who argue that animals have legal rights. This group advocate for equality. According to the author, the group advocates that it is the moral duty of the human beings to protect the environment and other wild animals since they have rights (Sagoff 5). This second group extends the moral boundaries so as to include the animals and all other creatures including trees. The liberators believe that tree and animals have legal standing and because of this, their interest should be represented in the courts, just the same way human interest is represented in court. This, the author says is totally impossible. Sagoff goes ahead to indicate that the welfare of all animals is in the hands of the society (4). Moreover, the society should not only attend to the needs of the domestic animals, but also the animals without help who are miserably out there in the wild. This he said is because the domestic animals are not in any special class. In defending his claim, the author argues that his stand should not be taken to be similar to those of animal liberators

2 case OD - Assignment Example 62). This advocates something that is more than reactive to the changes. A fully developed culture that is distinctive to the corporation necessitates from the need for change for the vigorous development of the corporation. This embraces the potentials and participation of every member of the company as going beyond passive. It would be unacceptable to assume that other companies would never be able o adapt the same system. The success of Setpoint lies on the role that the management places on their employees. It’s no less than adapting the saying that there are no small roles, only small actors. Because indeed, the company has shown that the concept of team is well integrated into their dynamics. Everyone was well-informed of their roles toward the achievement of a common goal as epitomized in their board. I believe that culture per se cannot be bought but it can be developed and the availability of money at a company’s disposal to achieve the development of culture is very helpful. The achievement of an evolved culture can be realized through the persistent efforts of the vital members of the company and including the involvement of all the employees. Everyone must be open for change and accept this change as a positive impact for the company. As consistently established, Organizational Development is a long-term commitment that needs time. It is not something that happens overnight. Culture is a combination not only of the management but also the organization (Brown and Harvey, p. 63). There are companies who are willing to shell out millions of dollars to be able to buy culture. This is only a manifestation of the necessity of culture. There are those who may have spent for brand imaging and public relations among others. But it is still the perception of those who are withi n the company and that which resonates to the public which

Discuss how the constant improvement of diagnostic techniques drives Essay

Discuss how the constant improvement of diagnostic techniques drives improvements in our understanding and treatment of disea - Essay Example Although these techniques were helpful for initial evaluation, they could not effectively anticipate responses to treatment or risk of complications to specific treatment methods. However, there are many recent developments in the area of cancer diagnosis. The development of molecular based technologies for cancer detection facilitated the identification of an inherited risk of breast cancer in people. In addition, this development assisted physicians to more accurately evaluate the prognosis of those who already living with the disease. By predicting an inherited risk of developing breast cancer, it is possible to treat the disease at the earlier stages and to avoid complex procedures like breast amputation. Likewise, an accurate evaluation of the prognosis would assist physicians to introduce suitable intervention mechanisms timely and prevent the diseases from getting deteriorated. Some recently developed diagnostic methods particularly focus on the identification of patients who are most likely to respond to certain type of treatment. This is very beneficial for reducing future complications associated with cancer treatment. Currently, analysis of gene expression data and computer aided imaging are the good techniques to predict the risk of cancer in patients and the response to particular treatments (Alexe et al 2009). In addition, cancer screening method has been developed to diagnose the disease even before the symptoms appear. As a result of these improvements in cancer diagnostic techniques, today people are increasingly aware of the benefits of early detection of cancer. In addition, such improvements have led to the development of more effective cancer treatment procedures. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a disease affecting the human immune system and is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). During the initial period of infection, the affected person may experience influenza like illness. This initial stage is generally foll owed by a long period without symptoms. As the diseases progresses, the patient becomes more vulnerable to other infections like opportunistic infections and tumors. Unsafe sexual intercourse and unsecure blood transfusions are the major causes of the HIV transmission. As per 2010 data, nearly 34 million people have contracted AIDS worldwide. Currently, statistical data indicate that the incidence of AIDS has decreased relative to the past decades. This decline in the prevalence rate can be attributed to improvements in HIV diagnostic techniques. Traditionally, the first generation immunoassay tests have been employed to diagnose the presence of HIV. Under this technique, HIV lysate was used as the source of antigen to capture the presence of the antibody in the sample (Chappel et al 2009). The first generation tests had many shortcomings because they often gave false-positive results as a result of the contamination of the antigen and variations in the lysates. The failure of first generations tests led to the introduction of second generation anti-HIV-1 immunoassays. The mean infectious window period was reduced from 56 to 42 days as a result of this invention. The second generation tests were based on ‘recombinant Escherichia coli- derive antigen preparations’

As I have said, Coca Cola Company has a huge distribution network and it is one of the best distribution network in the world, nobody in the beverage industry can match this tremendous asset. Another reason why the Coca Cola company is successful in its core activities, stems from its mission, vision values. This is the source where the CCC can attribute its success, its long-term strategy to become the most widely available consumed soft drink in the world. Perhaps the following statement which comes from the CCCs mission, vision values strategic outlook can be deemed a poignant assertion. Where the essence of individual talent is nurtured and encouraged, and group effort is identified as an important contributor to the goals of the CCC. Core activities The value of change plays an important part in the core activities of the Coca Cola Company because the company relies a lot in its suppliers, the bottles companies and the people selling the product. The suppliers are from people they get there ingredients like sugar, coffee, citrus around the world, the water they use in the process of making the beverage to the people in charge of the packaging.. Then come in role the Coca Cola system which is basically where first the company produces the beverages and then comes in play the bottling partners. They are independent bottling partners in charge manufacture, package and distribute the final product. Finally there is the selling the beverages process where the final products are taken to the warehouse for being distributed to retail outlets. The products are then distributed to the customers that are supermarket, convenience stores, restaurants, etc. And also to the vending machines and coolers that are place in strategic locations to reach all customers. And that way the product finally reach the consumers, around 1.6 billion time a day are the products consume Coca Cola Company depends a lot in other part to take the products to the consumers. They treat them with respect and importance and make them realize the importance of their work to the coca cola system. They have been using this system for years and so far had work perfectly. They are focus in the need of the consumers, the customers and the franchise partners; they think in terms of globalization, they are always aware of change. They also use an aggressive marketing strategy. Almost everywhere and in the most important events you can see a Coca Cola logo, they have billboards, commercials, products that will be associated with Coca Cola. Rationale The core activities are an important play for the company because if what makes them different from the rest of the company. They depends a lot in the suppliers the bottling companies and the customers. They play in an important role in making the product as the suppliers give them the prime materials. Then there are the bottling companies that are play an equal significant part, they are the package where the product is deliver and if you can see the bottle of the products of the company are immediately associated with the company. For example Coca Cola has a unique bottle design that everyone in the world with associate or recognized. Value Proposition Coca -Cola Company is an organization which provides value for their consumers and customers. Customers are their energy source for this organization. Creating the value starts with their coca cola products. Hence, this can greatly be achieved by greater variety of brands, pricing, packaging, and affordability. In addition, Coca-Cola products do focus on the customer lifestyle in terms of satisfaction. For example, if a person were to be on a diet, well there is diet coke. Hence, Coca Cola does engage in the customer needs in terms of the product. Coca- Cola has over nearly 400 brands (including water, juice, teas, coffees, energy drinks, and especially sodas) and wants to engage consumers to try something refreshing and new. It really comes down to choices for consumer in terms of coca cola products. Coca-cola brands include Fruitopia, Fanta, Sprite, Dasani, Nestea, Powerade, and many more brands. One of Coca-Colas slogans was Open Happiness. This slogan was represented to the consu mers and was meant to letting the consumers enjoy their products. Coca Cola is able to meet todays non-alcoholic beverage needs of consumers. Coca Colas current value proposition is The Coke Side of Life which represents happiness when you open up a can of coke or any other Coca-Cola product. The Coke Side of Life explains that it is an enjoyable, comfortable, and sociable environment when one actually consumes a Coca-Cola product. Rationale: Coca Cola Company continues to work on research/development and focus on making new products. For instance, a can of coke has a secret formula that will be difficult to imitate. Coca Cola products are significant because they make each product unique. Internal Fit/Factors Porter 5 Forces Analysis Threat of Entrants Coca-Cola does have a lot of competitors in the soft drink industry. The threat of entrants is low for the soft drink industry. There are very few entrants who can compete with Coke. In addition, a barrier to entry when entering the soft drink industry would be a high capital investment. If you dont have that high capital investment it would be hard to enter the industry. Coke nearly earns 48% of the soft drink industry and there are no competitors that are nowhere near coca colas distribution. Coca-Cola has over 500 brands of products which are potentially substitutes. To get the point, the buyer can switch from one product to another at no cost under the Coca Cola brand. Nowadays, consumers are really being health-conscious about their health. So they may not be interested in soft drinks but look at tea, juices, milk and even water. Certainly, Coke does have these products on hand. If Coca Cola decides to increase most of their product by a $0.50 increase, it would be very likely, consumers would buy Pepsi products. Coke can lose its profits margin and can have a major impact on the trademark itself if they increase prices. Price is a huge factor to take into consideration with regards to other entrants. The challenge for this organization today and the future is to focus private companies because they can imitate the products and put cheaper prices. Private companies currently earn 14.4% of the soft drink industry. Having strong barriers prevents from this rising situation to happen. One strong barrier to entrant that prevents from coming would be distribution channels. Coca cola has their products everywhere on their store shelves which make it accessible to consumers while new private companies will have a hard time selling their products to wholesalers, retailers, and distributors. Rationale: Entrants are slowly rising to the carbonated soft drink industry and as organization must find new barriers. Coca-Cola should continue to develop their brand loyalty worldwide and convince consumers to have reliability in their products. Barriers to entry One of the 5 forces that shape the soft drink industry is barriers to entry. The Coca Cola company says on its website it is facing strong competition from well-established global companies and many local participants. For this particular industry, the competitive forces are benign, (favourable). Most of the companies in the soft drink industry are profitable. The Coca Cola companys main competitors are Dr.Pepper, Nestle and Pepsico. These companies definitely have the advantage over there competitors. In porters 5 forces, Porter refers to supply-side economies of scale, where firms such as the CCC and Pepsico can produce at large volumes enjoy lower costs per unit because they can spread fixed costs over more units, employ more efficient technology, or command better terms from suppliers. According to Porters article, supply-side scale economies deter entry by forcing the aspiring entrant either to come in the industry on a large scale, which requires dislodging entrenched competito rs. How does a newcomer circumvent the barriers to soft drink industry? Perhaps create new distribution channels of their own. Creating a niche market for their drink in the form of marketing to a certain segment in the soft drink industry. Competitive Rivalry Competitive rivalry is between two main competitors the Coca Cola Company and Pepsico to satisfy the taste of consumers in this industry. Last month Beverage Digest reported that Pepsi-Colas market share fell 0.5 percentage point while Diet Coke slipped just 0.1 percentage point in the U.S. supermarkets, convenience stores and other retail outlets. The two companies have fought over the past decade to win market share from one another as overall sales dropped. This relates to Porters article on the 5 competitive forces that shape strategy. There is an intense rivalry between these two companies. According to porter high rivalry, limits the profitability of the industry. The Coca Cola Company and Pepsico are competing based on brand image. Power of the buyers One of the 5 forces of porter is buyers the power of the, for Coca Cola Company the power of the buyers is high. They play an important role in the Company process because they are part of the distribution process of the company. They play an important role in distributing the system so it can reach the consumers. They are part of the company and the process. They are part of the strategy used by the company. Power of the suppliers Another of the 5 forces of porter is the suppliers. As well they play an important role in the company process so they have a high power.
